Week In Review

Week In Review

Obviously, the most exciting that happened this week is our site launched!

But that’s not all we’re up to.

Sam finally got her copy of No Man’s Sky, the video game for PS4 and PC, this week (hers is the PS4 version). It got a lot of hype pre-release, and some people are pretty disappointed, but she was hoping for a gigantic universe to go around and scan things and give them funny names, and that’s exactly what she got. It’s kind of like Spore meets Minecraft, and she’s totally on board.

This week Anika finished watching the anime Soul Eater. It was Anika’s first time watching the whole series, but her tween daughter, Aeris’s fourth time. She’s a fan, and now so is her mom. Soul Eater is a supernatural action dramedy (it’s really quite the mishmash of genres) about a prep school for magical weapon masters and their magical weapons (who are also human). It’s run by Lord Death, the grim reaper, and they train to fight demons and witches, and then, as the title suggests, eat their souls to gain power. All four seasons are currently on Netflix.

Sam watched the movie The Lobster, which is a dystopian soft sci fi about a society where, if you’re single for 45 days (with some exceptions) you’re turned into an animal. She thinks it’s one of the best satires of modern life she’s seen in awhile, and it reminds her of all the best dystopian fiction she read in college: so close to real life with that one tiny mark of absurdity that makes reality seem even more absurd.

Anika celebrated Harry Potter’s birthday at Porter Square Books for the Midnight Release of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. She read it in one sitting the next morning — a quick, easy read that often felt like something she would, and even did, write. Which is to say, it’s a mess and she loved it. And she still doesn’t ship any of the canon ships. Except the one that is apparently now canon, that she also once wrote.

Anika drew this ten years ago. Draco and Ginny is the first HP ship she sailed, and remains her favorite. Thanks to The Cursed Child she’s hip deep back in it.

Have you seen Stranger Things yet? Yes? The soundtrack came out this week, and it’s just as awesome as you’d think it would be. Sam especially likes “Nancy and Barb,” but not because she ships it (she does) it’s just a nice track that really encapsulates the two of them. The best scores are like that; you can see the characters when their music is playing (see also The Force Awakens score), and Sam’s been listening to both volumes all week.

Pixie Recaps Voyager

Anika launched a Patreon for her Pixie Recaps. She’s also appearing at two Star Trek conventions: next weekend at The 50 Year Mission Tour in Cherry Hill, NJ to talk about Star Trek and Shakespeare and the following weekend at Star Trek Missions New York to talk about Star Trek and Literature! SO EXCITING. What will she wear?!
